Tied into safety harnesses, Yepes and his team slowly worked their way up the steep, narrow cables, fighting the wind coming off the harbor.

For nearly an hour, suspended in mid-air with the city skyline behind them, Yepes spoke calmly and compassionately to the individual.

"The care, courage, and compassion these officers showed was just extraordinary," noted Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch in a statement following the successful operation.

Body camera footage later captured the emotional climax of the encounter. As Yepes finally reached out, securing a grip on the individual, he can be heard repeating a simple, stabilizing vow: "I got you, I promise."

Working methodically, the team secured the person into a rescue harness and carefully guided them back down to the safety of the bridge deck. The individual was subsequently taken to a local hospital for evaluation and support.

A Week of Miracles

For Yepes, the reality of his transition to the ESU—which undergoes eight months of grueling physical and tactical training—hit home immediately. "This is what I've been training for, this is what I've prepared for," Yepes reflected in an interview. "And my ultimate goal is to make sure everyone's safe."
