Serious Incident Triggers Major Police Response

A serious stabbing incident in New York City's Times Square has left one person dead and another injured, prompting a major police response in one of Manhattan's busiest tourist areas.

According to police, a woman allegedly attacked two people with knives in the area of Seventh Avenue and West 42nd Street. The two victims were reportedly attacked within seconds of each other.

One Victim Dies After the Attack

One of the victims, a 32-year-old woman identified as Erin Piacenti, was transported to the hospital but later died from her injuries.

A 68-year-old man was also seriously injured in the attack. Authorities said he was hospitalized and later reported to be in stable condition.

Piacenti was a vice president at Bank of America. Her death has prompted an outpouring of condolences from colleagues, friends and others who knew her.

Police Confront the Suspect

Police located the suspected attacker near the Times Square area carrying two knives.

Officers repeatedly ordered the woman to drop the weapons. Authorities said attempts were made to stop her using Tasers, but she continued advancing toward officers. Police then opened fire, striking the suspect.

She was taken to a hospital and later died. Two knives were recovered at the scene.

Authorities Say Attack Appears to Be Random

Police officials described the stabbing as a random and unprovoked attack and said there was no indication that it was connected to terrorism.

The suspect, identified as a 49-year-old Queens woman, had a documented history involving mental health concerns, according to police officials. Investigators are continuing to examine what led to the attack.

The NYPD is conducting an investigation into both the stabbing and the subsequent police shooting. Officials have indicated that body-camera footage will be reviewed as part of the investigation.
